The world, and everything in it, is complex. Humans are no exception. And humanity’s interaction with that world makes things even more daunting to understand.
That’s where Wendover Productions, created by Sam Denby, comes in. Denby hopes to shed a bit of light onto the complex workings of our world.
“From travel, to economics, to geography, to marketing and more, every video will leave you with a little better understanding of our world,” Denby says.
How do budget airlines make money? How do YouTube’s content creators make money? How do aircraft carriers work? Such questions—along with the many others that Wendover Productions tries to answer—will require a lot of explanation. But if you’re willing to listen, Denby’s willing to put in the work.
Note: Wendover Productions has additional channels; the inactive Extremities, which covers remote settlements; Jet Lag: The Game, an Amazing Race-esque gameshow that has contestants racing around the world; and Half as Interesting, a channel dedicated to covering small-but-interesting facts and tidbits of history. This review will not be covering content found on those channels.
POSITIVE CONTENT
Denby puts a lot of research and editing into his videos. His research feels like it’s on par with many investigative journalists, and he approaches this issue from a third-party, non-biased perspective, giving fair insight into complex and sometimes divisive issues. Each video breaks its respective topic down into roughly 20-minute productions that are easy to understand.
CONTENT CONCERNS
There’s not too much that we saw on Wendover Productions that merits concern. However, some parents may want to be aware that a few videos deal with sensitive subjects, such as homelessness in California, gang warfare in El Salvador and mass shootings in Australia.
CHANNEL SUMMARY
Through the videos we watched on Wendover Productions, we left feeling a bit more educated while being no worse for wear. We did not come across any swearing or content that viewers may find objectionable—and despite a few videos that touch on some difficult topics, Denby handles them with the grace of a skilled journalist.
Kennedy Unthank
Kennedy Unthank studied journalism at the University of Missouri. He knew he wanted to write for a living when he won a contest for “best fantasy story” while in the 4th grade. What he didn’t know at the time, however, was that he was the only person to submit a story. Regardless, the seed was planted. Kennedy collects and plays board games in his free time, and he loves to talk about biblical apologetics. He thinks the ending of Lost “wasn’t that bad.”
