Five competitors step into the ring. At one end, a pen holds the quintet, who patiently wait for the side wall to drop, letting them spill onto a racetrack filled with obstacles. At the other end, tasty treats beckon the contestants to run as quick as possible in order to snag a few extra pieces before the rest of the competitors arrive.

The competition? A drift of Kunekune pigs, each representing a different country in the race.

There’s Piggy Smalls, the largest racer, representing the United States. His bulky build allows him to block out anyone who would attempt to overtake him.

Pepper Sanchez is the smallest and sweetest of them all, yet widely regarded as a fierce competitor in straight sprints. She’s representing Mexico.

Crossing the Pacific Ocean, we’d meet Hoshi Oinku, the cool and collected pig from Japan that is hard to stop once he gets going.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Bear Trotsky is somewhat of a dark horse: she’s more than able to set course records and win every single race—but only if she feels like it.

And finally, we come to the U.K., where our races take place and where Ginger Hamilton enjoys a home field advantage. Ginger’s closing speed means that she’s never truly out of a race.

So, who do you think will win?

POSITIVE CONTENT

The unnamed announcer for League of Pigs stokes viewer excitement to see which contestant will win each race. Additionally, in between races, we’ll get to know a little more about each pig’s personality as the channel takes time to focus on them. None of the contestants hogs the spotlight.

And as a sidenote, while we don’t know the name of the man who runs League of Pigs, we do know that the five Kunekune porkers are pets, so viewers won’t need to worry about the competitors being turned into bacon any time soon. And because the pigs are simply running to get food, viewers can be confident that the channel isn’t engaged in animal cruelty.

CONTENT CONCERNS

None. We didn’t notice any swearing in the videos we watched.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

When we say that YouTube has a channel for everybody, we mean it.

From gaming to cooking, beauty to engineering, entertainment reviews to simple commentary, thousands upon thousands of YouTube channels provide content for nearly everything you can think of. And that includes pet pig racing—a category we didn’t think we’d care for until we found League of Pigs.

League of Pigs is simple fun as we watch five adorable Kunekune pigs sprint to their food, complete with enjoyable racing commentary. And no matter which pig takes home the title of champion, we’re confident that—due to the lack of content concerns—the biggest winners are the viewers.

Blogilates https://www.pluggedin.com/youtube-reviews/blogilates/ Fri, 28 Jul 2023 20:28:17 +0000 https://www.pluggedin.com/?post_type=youtube-reviews&p=29629 Cassie Ho’s fitness channel encourages a balanced approach to health and wellness, albeit with a couple of minor caveats.

The post Blogilates appeared first on Plugged In.

]]>
“You have three career choices,” declared Cassie Ho’s parents: “A doctor, a lawyer or a failure.”

Cassie may not be a doctor or lawyer, but she’s certainly no failure.

During high school, Cassie had proclaimed that her dream career would be fashion designing. But her parents convinced her to attend college and work toward a medical profession.

Cassie’s future had other things in store.

Whenever she needed a break from homework, Cassie started a Pilates workout (a set of exercises focused on flexibility, strength and mindfulness). Often her friends joined. Cassie soon landed a job as a certified Pilates instructor and launched her YouTube channel, Blogilates.

Since then, Cassie Ho’s audience has grown to more than 8 million subscribers who look forward to her exercise tutorials, nutrition tips and lifestyle videos. She focuses on establishing healthy habits and inspiring people to be the best versions of themselves. Her workouts range from 30-minute challenges to 20-second clips on YouTube Shorts.

Cassie’s bright personality encourages her viewers to tackle even the most demanding exercises. And using the platform of Blogilates, Cassie launched an athletic clothing line called Popflex, allowing her childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer to actualize, too.

POSITIVE CONTENT

In my experience, fitness content tends to focus on weight loss and being skinny (especially when aimed at women). But Cassie’s approach is different. Although she does have some videos about waist training and losing weight, she strongly emphasizes that health and exercise is an individual experience. Her mission in posting workout tutorials is to help her viewers become the best versions of themselves. She notes that different bodies respond to exercise differently, and that’s OK.

In fact, in her video, “The ‘Perfect’ Body,” Cassie wanted to “battle body shaming and cyberbullying.” She responded to unkind YouTube comments about her body by making a satirical video. In it, she Photoshopped herself into having the “perfect” figure. In doing so, Cassie reminded her viewers that someone’s body doesn’t tell the whole story when it comes to that person’s fitness level.

Cassie’s expertise in the fitness world (as a certified Pilates instructor) adds to the usefulness of her channel. Not only does she provide valuable tips for nutrition and exercise, but she also shares physiological information about the workouts she leads. Cassie also speaks to women’s health. In her video, “Losing My Period,” Cassie talks about the harm of extreme exercise and diet by sharing her experience with amenorrhea.

Plus, on a less serious note, Cassie’s encouraging words and lively personality make her videos enjoyable (even if the workouts are challenging).

CONTENT CONCERNS

Some might consider Cassie’s fitness wear (including sports bras and leggings) to be a bit revealing, but no more so than what anyone would typically see at any gym.

Likewise, a majority of Cassie’s YouTube Shorts advertise and display her Popflex athletic line. She discusses how the clothing items fit on certain parts of her body, and Cassie will occasionally mention specific parts of female anatomy. To demonstrate the fit of her products, Cassie might squat or bend over, and some of the items Cassie models from her swimsuit line can also be revealing.

Cassie’s videos contain advertisements for her clothing line, and some of her earlier content includes sponsorship from other companies.

In addition to being a physical workout, Pilates is also a “mindset” exercise. Usually, Cassie’s references to this aspect of Pilates are positive. She talks about how working out can improve mental health, and she promotes positive self-image. However, sometimes Cassie includes messages about living your personal “truth.”

On her main YouTube channel, there’s not too much in the way of language concerns. Occasionally, Cassie will misuse God’s name while doing a difficult workout. In a collaboration video with other YouTubers, we hear someone voice the unfinished phrase, “Where the eff—?” Another person nearly uses an s-word.

Cassie’s YouTube Shorts can be more problematic, language-wise. Sometimes the music that underscores these videos includes uncensored profanity and other objectionable content.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

It’s refreshing to see a female fitness influencer who advocates for a positive outlook on body image. Young girls can easily become obsessed with the lie that diets and weight loss are the only path to beauty. Cassie Ho dispels that deception, emphasizing the message that fitness should ultimately make you feel healthy (not conform to impossible beauty standards that undermine your self-esteem).

Some of Cassie’s videos (especially her YouTube Shorts) include profanity, and parents of younger viewers should note that a few videos exist to sell Cassie’s clothing products. Still, Blogilates offers generally clean content. And Cassie Ho’s upbeat workout tutorials might provide necessary inspiration to start your own fitness journey.

Outdoor Boys https://www.pluggedin.com/youtube-reviews/outdoor-boys/ Fri, 06 Jan 2023 18:10:34 +0000 https://www.pluggedin.com/?post_type=youtube-reviews&p=27666 A father takes his wife and young boys out to explore and hunt in the outdoor world. And he teaches his viewers about the outdoors, too.

The post Outdoor Boys appeared first on Plugged In.

Sometimes, with all the luxuries we have, it can be hard to truly appreciate the great outdoors. When you’re used to air conditioning, a comfy bed and groceries from the supermarket, well, sometimes sleeping in a tent just doesn’t sound quite as nice.

But perhaps Luke Nichols and his family will change your mind.

Luke, who runs Outdoor Boys, loves going out the explore the world, and he loves taking his children—Tommy, Nate and Jacob—with him. He teaches his young sons (and us unsavvy viewers) all there is to know about the outdoors, from catching, cleaning and cooking animals to all aspects of camping. And they’ll often travel throughout the country and the world to see and experience new places. They’ve even driven from Key West, Florida, all the way to Deadhorse, Alaska.

Okay, maybe outdoorsy stuff still isn’t your thing. But perhaps you might still enjoy experiencing it secondhand through your screen.

Positive Content

Luke loves showing off the many interesting locations he travels to around the country, and his sons seem to enjoy exploring the outdoors with him, too. Through Luke’s experiences, viewers will learn a bit about exploring the outdoors.

It’s very apparent how much love Luke and his wife, Rebecca, have for their children. When traveling, they frequently ask the boys if they’re OK, and they console them when they get upset. And if one of his kids gets sick during a trip, Luke cancels planned events and activities rather than pushing through it for views. Additionally, Luke teaches the boys how to do certain outdoor tasks. In one video, Luke says that the YouTube channel and the outdoor activities are secondary to his “faith and family.”

Content Concerns

It should be noted that Luke is a devout Mormon, though we didn’t see any theological conversations within his videos apart from mentioning taking his family to church. In one explainer video, he mentions being a missionary in Japan for two years.

Luke’s hunting trips include “catching, cleaning and cooking” various animals, from frogs and fish to alligators. As such, parents should make sure they’re OK with their children viewing such animals being killed and skinned. Occasionally, Luke shoots a firearm.

We never heard swearing from Luke. Others featured in videos have sworn—though all swears are censored. One joke for a video partially exposes Luke’s rear. In another video, Tommy crashes his bike, and when Luke checks the injury on his rear, he jokes that Tommy has a “big crack” in his behind. The two make “clickbait” together by smearing fake blood on Tommy’s head.

Channel Summary

For those who don’t mind the dirt and grime of the wilderness, Outdoor Boys may be a nice watch for your family. And for those who don’t think their child is ready to watch an animal be hunted, killed and cleaned, the channel features plenty of other videos which feature travel or other child-friendly activities (such as Nerf gun fights). Though there’s a couple potential hiccups for viewers to consider, the channel is generally quite clean and fun to watch.

Meet 38-year-old Devin Graham, the creator of the uber popular YouTube channel, devinsupertramp.

Devin launched his YouTube channel back in 2010, close to the platform’s starting date, with a dream of creating stories through video. His initial videos consisted of drone shots from around the world, capturing the beauty of various countries. But as his skill grew, so did his range of content. As Devin branched into sports videos, he was contacted by big names such as Subaru, Ford and Disney to create video content for their commercials, all while continuing to funnel content to his YouTube channel.

Now, Devin has a video production company, focuses on visual story creation and has over 6 million YouTube subscribers. Within moments of watching any of his videos, you’ll see that his channel provides creative, original content. Categories include Insane Stunts (which really are wild); Parkour Videos that find people performing parkour moves in silly, reenacted versions of movies such as Jurassic World; Short Films that feature various subjects, such as capturing Pokémon; Video Games in Real Life that center on games like Minecraft; and World Travel, where Devin captures the beauty of places around the world.

Remember that one time when you hit that one unbelievable basketball shot from 30 feet away when you were in junior high? Remember what your best friend said? “DUUUUDDDDDEEEEE! That was PERFECT!!!” Don’t you wish you’d filmed it?

That, in a nutshell, is the genius behind Dude Perfect. And they did film it.

Back in 2009, the five Christian guys—all college friends—behind Dude Perfect filmed their first video: a bunch of seriously insane basketball trick shots in a backyard. It got 200,000 views its first week. (In 2009, mind you.) Eleven years later, it’s been viewed 40.5 million times. The guys didn’t know it at the time, but it was the beginning of a YouTube empire that over the course of a decade has generated a staggering 11.7 billion views on YouTube.

These guys are still hitting unbelievable trick shots of just about every kind imaginable, as well as branching out into other forms of laugh-inducing comedy videos (and even a CMT TV show). Celebrity athletes frequently put in cameos, too. Best of all, apart from one minor caveat, it’s all as family-friendly as it is fun.

Blippi https://www.pluggedin.com/youtube-reviews/blippi/ Fri, 23 Oct 2020 19:40:20 +0000 https://www.pluggedin.com/?post_type=youtube-reviews&p=21925 Blippi is a kid-centered YouTube learning channel that focuses on fun, educational videos from a child’s perspective.

Before his days as a YouTuber, 32-year-old Stevin John Grossman—now better known as Blippi—grew up in Washington and eventually served in the United States Air Force.

After he retired from military service, he observed his nephew watching low-quality, non-educational YouTube videos and decided to create better videos to give kids and parents something they could watch without worry.

Enter Blippi.

A fun-loving, whimsical character, Blippi is played by John Grossman himself. He specializes in creating educational, interactive videos that teach kids about the world around them.

After six years, Blippi has amassed nearly 10 milllion YouTube subscribers. And that’s just in English. There are also multiple channels that reach out to kids in other (dubbed) languages, such as Spanish, German, Portuguese and Arabic.

As the channel’s opening says: “Come on everyone, let’s make learning fun. So much to learn about, it’ll make you wanna shout Blippi!”
