But families should consider a couple of important issues.

The post JaidenAnimations appeared first on Plugged In.

]]>

Animators need to do more than simply draw compelling characters. They need to tell engaging stories with their drawings, ones that’ll captivate their audience and make them laugh (or cry) throughout. And Jaiden Dittfach, content creator behind JaidenAnimations, is able to do both.

In her work, Dittfach primarily uses things she’s personally experienced throughout her life, from going to the dentist to traveling to Japan. And while not every topic she speaks on may sound initially worth a 10-minute video, her nearly 13 million subscribers will testify to her ability to be funny and engaging on almost any topic.

POSITIVE CONTENT

As mentioned before, Dittfach is a wonderful storyteller, capable of weaving fun stories together that typically last 10 to 20 minutes. Whether she’s describing a trip to Japan or her multiple ventures in Pokémon Nuzlocke (a challenge which makes a Pokémon game much more difficult), Dittfach keeps viewers hooked until the very end.

For the most part, JaidenAnimations strives to be quite friendly to younger audiences. In the instances in which she does touch on topics that are more adult (such as when she describes confusing tetanus for AIDS), she tries to not go into too much detail for the sake of any potential watching children.

CONTENT CONCERNS

Nevertheless, some of Dittfach’s stories contain elements that families may find inappropriate. In one video, Dittfach recounts trying out five psychics, and the video includes references to tarot cards, palm readings and chakras. Likewise, another video gets into Dittfach learning about her sexuality, which she describes as “aromantic and asexual.” (Rarely does Dittfach’s sexuality come into play in her other videos.)

Other videos contain some light swearing, including words like “d–n,” “h—,” “p-ssed” and “crap.” God’s name is occasionally used in vain. And there was one instance in which an s-word is cut off.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

With some exceptions (particularly the aforementioned two video topics and occasional swearing), JaidenAnimations is an enjoyable watch. Younger audiences will certainly be drawn in by Dittfach’s fun art style. However, because some videos contain content that may not be appropriate for said children, we’d caution parents to watch beforehand to determine if JaidenAnimations is right for them.

Harry Pinero https://www.pluggedin.com/youtube-reviews/harry-pinero/ Fri, 15 Mar 2024 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.pluggedin.com/?post_type=youtube-reviews&p=31291 Harry Pinero welcomes viewers into his life through vlog and challenge content. But his use of profanity and crude jokes is not so welcoming.

The post Harry Pinero appeared first on Plugged In.

]]>
When it comes to typical YouTube content, you probably know what to expect: challenge videos, friendly banter, vlogs. The list goes on.

British influencer Harry Pinero fits neatly into this quintessential description of a YouTube creator.

Through a combination of vlog and game formats, Harry shares his passion for travel, soccer and friends. In one video, Harry documents his luxurious travels to Qatar. In longer format videos titled, “The Inside Scoop,” Harry discusses soccer players and shares updates about the sport. And several videos feature Harry attempting internet challenges with his friends.

Harry also has a significant social media presence on Instagram, and he occasionally streams video game content on Twitch.

Whether he’s roaming the streets of Oxford or riding Mario Kart-themed go-karts, Harry’s upbeat personality enlivens his experiences and engages his internet audience.

POSITIVE CONTENT

What is YouTube if not a place for viewers to experience vicarious adventures? In several of his vlog videos, viewers can virtually accompany Harry on his luxurious travels. Some videos include inside looks at fancy, first-class flights, VIP experiences and extravagant hotel rooms—making for interesting (though potentially envy-inducing) viewing.

Segments of Harry’s videos also include positive messages about healthy lifestyle choices, and one video is dedicated to Harry’s efforts for a soccer-related charity organization. In one YouTube Shorts video, Harry discusses how he overcame a gambling addiction.

Harry also displays generally positive relationships with his friends. He talks to them about his love for his son, and the friends seem to support one another.

CONTENT CONCERNS

While Harry’s friendships do seem genuine, many of their conversations involve digs at one another. While these jabs are done in jest, parents may not want their young kids to emulate such banter. Additionally, some of Harry’s jokes rely on crude humor. For example, in one video, someone offhandedly mentions a dangerous drug, and later someone crudely discusses flatulence. In some of his shorter videos, Harry’s content includes sexual references and innuendos.

Men sometimes vlog shirtless in videos. Harry and his friends occasionally talk about alcohol.

But the primary concern in Harry’s content is profanity. Videos include the f-word, s-word and n-word, and these profanities usually remain uncensored. Videos also include “d–n,” “h—,” “b–tard” and misuses of God’s name.

While it doesn’t come up often, Harry is Muslim, and he occasionally discusses his faith on the channel. In one video, Harry exclaims, “All glory to Allah,” before he plays a soccer game. And in another video, he mentions his Umrah—a ceremonial pilgrimage to Mecca.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

Anyone who spends time on YouTube will find Harry’s formats familiar. His reaction videos, guessing-game content and “try not to laugh” challenges aren’t exactly original ideas. Still, like many other successful YouTubers, Harry Pinero mixes his passions and personality with these dependable formats in a manner that resonates with thousands of viewers.

Unfortunately, Harry Pinera’s otherwise tame content includes frequent uncensored profanity and occasional crude or sexual jokes.

Airrack https://www.pluggedin.com/youtube-reviews/airrack/ Fri, 02 Feb 2024 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.pluggedin.com/?post_type=youtube-reviews&p=30982 Airrack is the adult version of popular MrBeast-style challenge channels.

The post Airrack appeared first on Plugged In.

]]>
“I’m just a kid with a dream.”

So reads the bio of popular challenge vlogger Eric Decker on the YouTube Channel Airrack. And what dreams might those entail? Well, his videos just may provide a clue.

In one, Decker breaks the Guinness World Record for largest pizza ever made. In another, he forces his friends to play “real life” games of Would You Rather, urging them to actually choose and do the option they’ve chosen. In a third, he hires bodyguards to see if the public will think he’s someone famous.

(OK, that doesn’t exactly shed light into what sort of dream Airrack is having, but at least the pizza one does sound similar to a dream I’ve had before.)

What will Decker do next? Well, we’re not sure. But we’ll guess that it’ll be full of adventure.

POSITIVE CONTENT

Decker and friends challenge each other. And while not every challenge will be family friendly (as we’ll discuss below), at least these friends enjoy each other’s company.

CONTENT CONCERNS

But there’s also quite a bit that families will want to note.

Sexual quips are made in some videos, and sometimes, it goes a bit further. In one video, a couple men strip naked and swim in front of men and women, only covered from the viewer by an edited-on emoji. Another two men try being drag queens, and one man’s underwear is briefly visible. Some women are seen in bikinis, and men are seen shirtless. We also hear a couple discussions about sex. Men eat raw meat, including bull testicles.

Jokes about spiritual topics occur, too. When one of Decker’s friends is put in an uncomfortable situation, the phrase “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus” briefly flashes onscreen. Decker plays a prank on strangers where he “walks on water,” and we hear a few references to the biblical account of Jesus. At another moment in that same video, someone jokes about “dark art Mayan rituals.”

Swear words are censored, though it’s still evident what words are being used. However, inappropriate uses of God’s name (including the name of Jesus) go uncensored.

Other YouTubers have posted compelling videos detailing how Airrack has cheated or misled viewers in some of his more recent challenge videos.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

Airrack, like MrBeast and Unspeakable, is a challenge vlogging channel that spends a good amount of money to have fun with friends.

But while MrBeast and Unspeakable tend to be a bit tamer, Airrack leans more heavily adult—especially when it comes to its reliance on sexual topics. For that reason (and for the frequent censored swearing), Airrack likely won’t be something you’ll want to be showing to your children.

penguinz0 https://www.pluggedin.com/youtube-reviews/penguinz0/ Fri, 24 Nov 2023 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.pluggedin.com/?post_type=youtube-reviews&p=30447 As the most popular YouTube commentator, penguinz0 may have some good points, but there’s a whole lot of content to waddle through, too.

The post penguinz0 appeared first on Plugged In.

]]>
Long ago, in a distant land where information was provided by newspaper, people liked sharing their opinions through “Letters to the Editor.” And when one letter was published, a response could often result in more responses to the previous published opinion. Sometimes, this section would be the most popular part of the newspaper.

Well, with the Internet era, these letters aren’t nearly as popular as they once were—but the concept behind them still is. Some have even become famous for commenting on what others say or do. They gain large followings for their wit, insight or contributions regarding the source material.

Perhaps the most famous YouTube commentator in this vein is Charlie White Jr., the face of the YouTube channel penguinz0. Also known as MoistCr1TiKaL or just Cr1TiKaL, Charlie fills his channel with daily commentary on various videos that he finds or that his fans send him to watch. Sometimes, these clips are about fellow YouTubers and Internet drama. Other times, Charlie reviews movies and video games in his Moist Meter series, telling his audience his likes and dislikes about the entertainment and rating it on a percentage scale from zero to 100.

And in each video, penguinz0 jokes about the topics and provides his opinion on them.

POSITIVE CONTENT

Charlie is unafraid to call out people for doing things that are wrong or for being selfish. For example, penguinz0 shows a number of videos of men asking women out and refusing to accept when they’re declined—and though the content itself can get upsetting, it’s still a positive thing for Charlie to condemn, especially in front of his large audience.

In another video, he brings to light a Japanese game show that arguably tortured a man to attract viewers. And on a similar note, Charlie discusses some issues with TikTok, YouTube and the live-streaming site Twitch, especially noting how the organizations sometimes allegedly allow content that definitely goes against their own content standards.

Likewise, Charlie has a couple videos condemning false Christian teachers for attempting to use the religion for profit. While Charlie isn’t religious, he says the following: “I have nothing but respect for people that are religious. What I don’t have respect for are those Christian cult leaders that justify having five private airplanes that they take from peoples’ donations to the church.”

For those out of the loop on Internet issues, Charlie does a pretty fair job in explaining them. And though many of his comments can be inappropriate, Charlie does have a clever sense of humor that is likely the source of his audience.

CONTENT CONCERNS

While there are things on Charlie’s channel that we can commend, there’s also a whole bunch that will likely immediately disqualify it for your family, too.

Sexual references are common, from casual one-liner jokes to in-depth conversations that span the length of the whole video. We hear many discussions about pornography, masturbation, sex and more. Many videos reveal Charlie’s extensive collection of sex toys (the YouTuber is sponsored by a prominent adult shop). And in some videos, we can see men and women in revealing clothing.

There are some difficult topics on penguinz0. In one video, he discusses a TikTok creator who makes videos that use fake implied rape as a joke. In another, he calls out YouTube for allowing uploaded videos which included a creator torturing live animals. In yet another, he critiques the site for hosting pornography that’s uploaded under the guise of “education.” In other videos, Charlie discusses a man who has been caught trying to meet up with underaged children. We also learn of a disturbing trend that includes someone’s suicide being attached to videos.

Some content about Christianity makes an appearance, too. Charlie streams himself playing a couple of video games made about Christianity complete with some disrespectful moments. Charlie additionally watches and discusses some videos or sermons that contain fringe Christian teachers. And somewhat connected, Charlie sometimes discusses a running joke that he looks like Jesus.

Finally, bad language is very frequent, with almost every swear word our organization tracks used and uncensored. This includes misuses of God’s name as well as irreverent comments like “slap the holiness out of Jesus.”

Occasionally, penguinz0 makes a joke or two about drugs. Some of his earliest content is based around Call of Duty gameplay. (The game is rated M.)

CHANNEL SUMMARY

Were Plugged In to review YouTubers based on how friendly they seem, Charlie would probably be in the running for a top spot. His laid-back demeanor makes viewers feel like they could grab coffee with him. And because his content is primarily centered around him chatting with his audience, his personality is likely the biggest draw to the millions who are subscribed to him.

But Plugged In ultimately seeks to provide parents with the purely content-centric information they need in order to make educated decisions about what they do and don’t allow their families to watch. And when we view penguinz0 from that perspective, the content creator will probably be one of the hardest sells for families.

Discover Connection https://www.pluggedin.com/youtube-reviews/discover-connection/ Fri, 27 Oct 2023 18:11:52 +0000 https://www.pluggedin.com/?post_type=youtube-reviews&p=30261 True to its title, Discover Connection seeks to do exactly what you might expect—but not without a few caveats.

The post Discover Connection appeared first on Plugged In.

]]>
Knock knock.

Who’s at the door? A complete stranger, wanting to know if they can cook you dinner in your kitchen on their dime.

Sound outlandish? It’s actually a common practice for Brad Lancaster on Discover Connection.

“I believe our society today is facing a really big problem,” Lancaster says. “We are more divided and disconnected than ever before … but I personally believe that what we’re all searching for is just real, genuine connection. And the sole mission of this channel is to explore what human connection really is.”

And in pursuit of that mission, well, Lancaster and some friends will put themselves in some interesting situations to do it.

POSITIVE CONTENT

Lancaster and his friends do end up making a whole lot of connections. Whether they’re offering to make them dinner or asking for a ride across the country, they’ve heard a lot of stories and gotten to show how quickly strangers can become friends.

That’s great for the channel’s mission, which aims to combat what Lancaster sees as a world that’s becoming increasingly more divided and hostile to strangers. To that end, Lancaster does a lot of other nice things, too, such as helping strangers with whatever they need done and buying people gifts for Christmas.

CONTENT CONCERNS

That said, there are some issues viewers need to note. We hear some lighter language like “h—” and “d–n” somewhat frequently. In addition, though heavier swears like the f- and s-word are typically censored out, we did hear a couple that managed to sneak past the censor. Likewise, God’s name is taken in vain, including in the form of “g-dd–n.”

A couple videos contain jokes that reference sexual encounters. One woman admits she’d like to sleep with one of the men on the channel. In one video, a man must attempt to invite strangers to a barbecue while in a public restroom, and in the same video, another man goes into Victoria’s Secret to invite a woman. We see men and women in swimsuits. People drink alcohol.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

Lancaster notes that everyone longs for connection, and there’s truth to that. It’s why he has set out to make friends with so many people and make the world seem just a bit kinder.

But perhaps the reason everyone yearns for connection is because we are severed from God, the only One who can truly satisfy that desire for complete and true connection—one that abounds in love and an intimate knowledge of who we are in Him.

Discover Connection doesn’t quite get there. But the channel does show us how easy it truly can be to become friends with total strangers, and it does help to break down a mean world syndrome that latches to our hearts.

Of course, those positive things come with a bit of swearing and the occasional crude joke that will make the channel a bit more difficult to allow your child to watch. But at the very least, we can appreciate the heart and mission behind it.

Doctor Mike https://www.pluggedin.com/youtube-reviews/doctor-mike/ Fri, 29 Sep 2023 18:16:59 +0000 https://www.pluggedin.com/?post_type=youtube-reviews&p=30057 Doctor Mike will teach you a lot about medical injuries and issues—with all the good and bad that comes with them.

The post Doctor Mike appeared first on Plugged In.

]]>
Imagine a hypothetical with me, if you will: You’re plopped down in your favorite recliner watching the newest episode of your favorite medical drama. The overly attractive surgeon flirts his way past his on-again, off-again romantic interest before bursting into the surgical room where his unconscious patient waits, wound open and ready for operation.

“Get me a scalpel, a clamp and 100 cc’s of saline,” he yells out, ripping his surgical mask off for visual effect.

Inevitably, the high-pitched drone of a flatline fills the air. A random nurse appears with a defibrillator and shocks the body to no effect.

“He’s dead, Doc,” an intern states, just in case the viewer wasn’t able to deduce as much.

But unlike his failed marriage, “Doc” won’t give up. He rolls up his sleeves and starts chest compressions to the shocked silence of everyone else in the room. They’ve all already given up hope. But a moment later, the once-heavily sedated patient gasps back to life, and our main character is once again a hero.

Alright, hypothetical over. Now, if you were an average viewer or a screen writer, you might not think much of what you just saw on the TV. But for people like Dr. Mikhail Varshavski, creator of the YouTube channel Doctor Mike, you just might notice a couple things that don’t quite line up with how things really happen.

On his channel, Varshavski gives his expert medical reactions and opinions about various medical TV shows, questions and advice. He’ll also view various sports and everyday injuries and give his assessment of what they may now be suffering from.

POSITIVE CONTENT

Doctor Mike uses his medical expertise to help separate truth from falsehood. He’ll likewise teach his viewers about how various injuries or diseases are treated as well as how they can work to prevent these things from happening to them. And Varshavski often gives advice on how to get healthier.

Varshavski also takes time to answer questions on topics that, while important, wouldn’t likely be relevant on any given trip to the doctor. In this way, his community is able to have personal questions answered without them having to feel awkward for asking them.

CONTENT CONCERNS

While we only heard Varshavski misuse God’s name, some of the clips he plays contain swearing, including uncensored f-words, s-words and more. Additionally, some of the shows he reacts to make references to sex. And, because Doctor Mike often reacts to medical content, he’ll also show some clips of bloody injuries or surgeries—though these are usually censored or blurred in some way.

Varshavski also reacts to other inappropriate content. In particular, he reacts to some of the injuries that take place in the Jacka– franchise. These injuries include a man wearing only a jockstrap being hit in the crotch. The clips also include a man’s naked rear and a man pouring alcohol into his anus. Additionally, in a video on how types of underwear may affect our health, Varshavski briefly shows images of men and women in undergarments.

While not explicitly negative, it should be noted that Varshavski’s comprehensive talks about body health do deal with topics related to sex, pubic hair and genitals. He also talks a bit about things like breast surgery, birth control and marijuana use.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

Going to the doctor’s office might not be at the top of your list of favorite things to do, but Doctor Mike makes the visit a bit more enjoyable. However, not everything Varshavski reacts to will be appropriate for viewers of all ages, and, at the very least, we’d encourage parents to watch alongside their child (if not screen videos beforehand) to address any questions that come up. It’s always nice to have a doctor available to answer questions. It’s even better to have a parent.

Drew Binsky https://www.pluggedin.com/youtube-reviews/drew-binsky/ Thu, 07 Sep 2023 17:16:58 +0000 https://www.pluggedin.com/?post_type=youtube-reviews&p=29919 Step aside, Johnny Cash, because Drew Binsky really has been everywhere.

The post Drew Binsky appeared first on Plugged In.

]]>
If Johnny Cash ever met Drew Goldberg, he might not have been so quick to say that he’s been everywhere.

That’s because in October of 2021, the YouTuber, going by his online name Drew Binsky, successfully visited every one of the 197 countries recognized by the United Nations. Through his 11 years of travels, he’s obviously experienced hundreds of different cultures, and he’s ready to tell his viewers all about them.

And just because Binsky’s visited every country doesn’t mean he’s done. After all, the world’s a big place, and he’s got a long way to go to see everything. That means that even though he’s already got over 1,000 videos about his around-the-world experiences, he’s still got a lot of content he can’t wait to share with his subscribers.

Positive Content

Drew Binsky loves exploring the world, and he almost always has a lot of nice things to say about the places he visits.

“Humanity is beautiful no matter where you go,” Binsky says.

He likes to dispel popular misconceptions about various cultures and locations, and his travels have earned him friends around the world. But while he stays generally positive, he’s also not afraid to talk about things or experiences he did not like.

Additionally, in one video, Binsky tells viewers that he used to party and drink a lot, but he considers it now a waste of time and money. He now prefers to use those resources to allow him to view more of the world.

In a handful of videos, Binsky talks about some problems that face various cultures, such as the ethics of tribe tourism and drug epidemics within some communities.

Content Concerns

Binsky swears, though heavier swears like the f-word and s-word are typically censored. However, lighter swears, like “d–n” and “h—,” are still heard. He also uses God’s name in vain.

And as stated before, Binsky does discuss the production and consumption of some drugs around the world. He also has some stories of when he experienced dangerous situations that may be intense for the youngest of viewers. Some videos contain censored nudity, such as when Binsky visits some tribal communities.

Channel Summary

The world’s a big place, and you probably aren’t going to be able to see all of it. With that in mind, for adults, it may be worth watching a video or two from Drew Binsky to learn what countries they might want to see. But the profanity might put the brakes for many an online traveler, and certainly parents may want to view these videos before they let their children watch them.

Blogilates https://www.pluggedin.com/youtube-reviews/blogilates/ Fri, 28 Jul 2023 20:28:17 +0000 https://www.pluggedin.com/?post_type=youtube-reviews&p=29629 Cassie Ho’s fitness channel encourages a balanced approach to health and wellness, albeit with a couple of minor caveats.

The post Blogilates appeared first on Plugged In.

]]>
“You have three career choices,” declared Cassie Ho’s parents: “A doctor, a lawyer or a failure.”

Cassie may not be a doctor or lawyer, but she’s certainly no failure.

During high school, Cassie had proclaimed that her dream career would be fashion designing. But her parents convinced her to attend college and work toward a medical profession.

Cassie’s future had other things in store.

Whenever she needed a break from homework, Cassie started a Pilates workout (a set of exercises focused on flexibility, strength and mindfulness). Often her friends joined. Cassie soon landed a job as a certified Pilates instructor and launched her YouTube channel, Blogilates.

Since then, Cassie Ho’s audience has grown to more than 8 million subscribers who look forward to her exercise tutorials, nutrition tips and lifestyle videos. She focuses on establishing healthy habits and inspiring people to be the best versions of themselves. Her workouts range from 30-minute challenges to 20-second clips on YouTube Shorts.

Cassie’s bright personality encourages her viewers to tackle even the most demanding exercises. And using the platform of Blogilates, Cassie launched an athletic clothing line called Popflex, allowing her childhood dream of becoming a fashion designer to actualize, too.

POSITIVE CONTENT

In my experience, fitness content tends to focus on weight loss and being skinny (especially when aimed at women). But Cassie’s approach is different. Although she does have some videos about waist training and losing weight, she strongly emphasizes that health and exercise is an individual experience. Her mission in posting workout tutorials is to help her viewers become the best versions of themselves. She notes that different bodies respond to exercise differently, and that’s OK.

In fact, in her video, “The ‘Perfect’ Body,” Cassie wanted to “battle body shaming and cyberbullying.” She responded to unkind YouTube comments about her body by making a satirical video. In it, she Photoshopped herself into having the “perfect” figure. In doing so, Cassie reminded her viewers that someone’s body doesn’t tell the whole story when it comes to that person’s fitness level.

Cassie’s expertise in the fitness world (as a certified Pilates instructor) adds to the usefulness of her channel. Not only does she provide valuable tips for nutrition and exercise, but she also shares physiological information about the workouts she leads. Cassie also speaks to women’s health. In her video, “Losing My Period,” Cassie talks about the harm of extreme exercise and diet by sharing her experience with amenorrhea.

Plus, on a less serious note, Cassie’s encouraging words and lively personality make her videos enjoyable (even if the workouts are challenging).

CONTENT CONCERNS

Some might consider Cassie’s fitness wear (including sports bras and leggings) to be a bit revealing, but no more so than what anyone would typically see at any gym.

Likewise, a majority of Cassie’s YouTube Shorts advertise and display her Popflex athletic line. She discusses how the clothing items fit on certain parts of her body, and Cassie will occasionally mention specific parts of female anatomy. To demonstrate the fit of her products, Cassie might squat or bend over, and some of the items Cassie models from her swimsuit line can also be revealing.

Cassie’s videos contain advertisements for her clothing line, and some of her earlier content includes sponsorship from other companies.

In addition to being a physical workout, Pilates is also a “mindset” exercise. Usually, Cassie’s references to this aspect of Pilates are positive. She talks about how working out can improve mental health, and she promotes positive self-image. However, sometimes Cassie includes messages about living your personal “truth.”

On her main YouTube channel, there’s not too much in the way of language concerns. Occasionally, Cassie will misuse God’s name while doing a difficult workout. In a collaboration video with other YouTubers, we hear someone voice the unfinished phrase, “Where the eff—?” Another person nearly uses an s-word.

Cassie’s YouTube Shorts can be more problematic, language-wise. Sometimes the music that underscores these videos includes uncensored profanity and other objectionable content.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

It’s refreshing to see a female fitness influencer who advocates for a positive outlook on body image. Young girls can easily become obsessed with the lie that diets and weight loss are the only path to beauty. Cassie Ho dispels that deception, emphasizing the message that fitness should ultimately make you feel healthy (not conform to impossible beauty standards that undermine your self-esteem).

Some of Cassie’s videos (especially her YouTube Shorts) include profanity, and parents of younger viewers should note that a few videos exist to sell Cassie’s clothing products. Still, Blogilates offers generally clean content. And Cassie Ho’s upbeat workout tutorials might provide necessary inspiration to start your own fitness journey.

Safiya Nygaard https://www.pluggedin.com/youtube-reviews/safiya-nygaard/ Fri, 14 Jul 2023 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.pluggedin.com/?post_type=youtube-reviews&p=29502 Trying to make sense of strange fashion movements, Safiya Nygaard creatively blends trend testing with beauty content.

The post Safiya Nygaard appeared first on Plugged In.

]]>
Have you ever wanted to mix every color of lipstick at Sephora? Is clothing from the fast-fashion brand, Wish, worth the hype? What would happen if you bought products recommended by TikTok and Instagram?

Safiya Nygaard answers these queries and more.

Originally an employee at the media company Buzzfeed, Safiya left in early 2017 to start her own YouTube channel about fashion, beauty and popular trends.

With her husband, Tyler, and feline friend, Crusty, Safiya tries convenience-store makeup, purchases clothing while blindfolded and travels the world to learn about beauty abroad.

One of Safiya’s earlier series involves her trying odd clothing trends like platform crocs and clear-knee jeans. Another series, called “Bad Makeup Science,” Safiya mixes various beauty products like lipsticks, eyeshadow palettes and scented hand sanitizers to make a new “franken-product” (as she calls it).

Safiya Nygaard might inspire you to reinvent your wardrobe, but more likely she’ll teach you about the fashion industry and get you chuckling about its oddities.

POSITIVE CONTENT

While her vast clothing and makeup collections show that she enjoys all things beauty, Safiya generally promotes body positivity, focusing on ways that beauty products can extenuate her body’s natural features.

Although her channel’s focus isn’t education, many of Safiya’s videos involve research about fashion throughout the decades and fashion in different cultures. She interviews experts in the beauty industry and YouTubers from the countries she visits. Safiya has also made some videos about the process of making makeup.

CONTENT CONCERNS

Safiya occasionally uses profanity in her videos. She censors heavy profanity like the f-word and the s-word, but words like “h—,” “d–n,” “a–,” “b–tard,” “crap” and misuses of God’s name can be heard. She also has a video in which she designs outfits according to her Zodiac sign. And as part of the video, Safiya interviews an astrology expert/psychic reader.

Safiya is married to Tyler now. But when she first started her channel, Tyler was her long-term boyfriend, and the couple was clearly living together.

Although her collection of makeup and clothing is mainly for her YouTube channel, many of Safiya’s videos feature her buying a plethora of beauty products, including from some fast-fashion sites like Wish and Romwe. Safiya isn’t necessarily promoting consumerism, but many of her videos involve her reviewing “hauls” of these products.

Many of these haul videos include segments in which Safiya scrolls through social media and clothing websites. Sometimes the advertising images show underdressed models, but Safiya will blur any outright nudity in these images.

In videos in which she tries different types of clothing, Safiya references how certain pieces fit on specific body parts. Her descriptions aren’t crude, but she will discuss how a pair of pants feels on her behind or how a shirt makes her breasts look. For example, in a video called, “I Bought the First 5 Things Facebook Recommended to Me,” Safiya purchases bras and underwear. She discusses how the items feel, but she does not show herself wearing these items. (In this video, Safiya also purchases condoms–per Facebook’s ad recommendations–but she does not go into any details reviewing that item.)

Although it’s not a negative thing, some parents might want to note that Safiya made a few videos about products related to menstruation, in which she tested things like menstrual cups and period underwear. Safiya talks openly and specifically about her experience with her period, but just to help other women.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

Safiya Nygaard’s channel offers a fresh take on beauty content, an industry that can often come off as insincere and toxic. Safiya doesn’t pressure her viewers to conform to beauty standards. Instead, she focuses on the fun of fashion without obsessing about her image.

While families will certainly want to be aware of the profanity and consumerist tendencies, Safiya’s channel is more navigable than many other YouTubers on the site.

Life is full of silly occurrences. Max Fosh is responsible for many of them.

Fosh enjoys the sillier things of life, and he uploads his pursuit of such things onto his eponymous YouTube channel.

What are some of those silly things, you might ask? Well, they include technically becoming the world’s richest man for seven minutes, DJ’ing Beethoven at a nightclub and legally becoming his parents’ favorite child. In fact, he’s so dedicated to finding such silly things that he created a “religion” called Silly-ism—just as another way to create a bit of fun.

Would it be a surprise to learn that Fosh does stand-up comedy?

POSITIVE CONTENT

Fosh reminds us to enjoy the sillier side of life—and that’s paradoxically important in a world filled with so many dour issues. We should be reminded that, while we should be serious often, we shouldn’t go through life so serious that we miss the beauty of the world around us. Fosh’s pranks cause many strangers around him to laugh.

And some of Fosh’s videos actually teach us, too. For instance, in one video, after having a private investigator tail him for a month, Fosh helps viewers learn how they can better keep their passwords protected from prying online eyes. In his video on creating the religion of Silly-ism, Fosh meets with an expert who explains how many religions are typically legally recognized.

CONTENT CONCERNS

Some of Fosh’s content is sexual. In one video, he spends a day with nudists, and he joins them for the experience (while critical parts are censored, we still see quite a bit). Fosh also attends a convention for pornographers, and many women are seen in revealing lingerie. Fosh furthermore hires a couple of porn actresses to see how well they can act in a genuine film. Fosh’s channel’s YouTube banner contains an image of him in underwear and another censored nude image of him during his nudist video.

We’ll also hear the occasional swear word, including an s-word, “h—,” “d–n” and “b–tard.” God’s name is occasionally abused, and Jesus’ name is used in vain. He visits a couple casinos and night clubs, and he sometimes drinks beer. In his video on Silly-ism, Fosh pretends to speak with God.

CHANNEL SUMMARY

Max Fosh has some interesting ideas for videos. Many of his titles caused me to wonder how Fosh came up with each video’s premise. Whatever the cause, we know the intended result: do something silly.

Parents should note that due to Fosh’s occasional language and his exploration of some sexual topics, you likely won’t find the channel to be appropriate for your child.
